Helping Victims of The Earthquake

Corona was not the only disaster that affected Rwanda in 2021. On the night of May 24, Volcano Nyiaragongo located on the border of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of the Congo erupted. Even though Rwanda was not hit by the lava, it suffered from multiple earthquakes that went up to 5.3 in magnitude lasting for several weeks post the eruption. Large cracks split through the earth damaging a lot of houses. Our preschools in Rubona and Gisa, as well as homes of our personnel were no exception. Deep cracks appeared in their walls, and some parts of the houses collapsed. Since staying inside the half-destroyed houses was dangerous, many people had to sleep outside. The town of Rubavu on the border with Congo was flooded by refugees fleeing from the lava and gas from the volcano. We gave out 20 tons of food and helped restore the damaged houses.
